The celebration of New Year's Day is one of the oldest holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon 4000 years ago. Around 2000 BC it was celebrated on March 23rd as a sign of spring and harvest.
The Romans also celebrated New Year's Day in March, until the Roman calendar was changed so many times that it was soon out of sync with the sun. In 153 BC the Roman Senate changed New Year's Day to January 1st.
In 46 BC Julius Caesar established a new calendar and also set New Year's Day as January 1st. In order to get back in sync with the sun's changes, the previous year had to go on for 445 days.
